Liquid Gold: The Booming Market for Human Breast Milk

It started with a bleary-eyed Google search: “Sell breast milk.” Desiree Espinoza had a 2-month-old baby girl but was pumping out enough milk to feed triplets. Ziplock baggies full of the stuff were crammed in her freezer, and unpaid bills crowded her kitchen table. She wasn’t sure there was a market for her overflow or whether selling it was even legal. A few clicks later, she found herself on a website called Only the Breast.

The site looks a lot like craigslist, except instead of selling used cars and like-new Ikea furniture, Only the Breast deals in human breast milk. There are hundreds of posts from new mothers eager to turn their surplus into profits. Many kick off with a chirpy headline (“Chubby baby milk machine!”), then follow with a snapshot of their own robust infant and lush descriptions (“rich, creamy breast milk!” “fresh and fatty!”), making a primal source of nutrition sound like a New York cheesecake. The posts are additionally categorized to appeal to a variety of milk seekers, based on a baby’s age (from 0 to 12 months), say, or special dietary restrictions (dairy- and gluten-free). There’s also a sort of “anything goes” section for women willing to sell to men. Some ship coolers of frozen milk packed in dry ice. Others deal locally, meeting in cafés to exchange cash for commodity. The asking price on Only the Breast runs $1 to $2.50 an ounce. (A 6-month-old baby consumes about 30 ounces a day.)

Kristine sells 50-60 ounces of her milk weekly to a local family. She meets the family in a parking lot where they buy their milk for a dollar per ounce. While Kristine’s breast milk supply is ample, her bank account is a different story.

Sites like OnlyTheBreast.com set guidelines, but the site’s designer, Glenn Snow, says it’s ultimately up to the seller to follow the recommendations and the buyer to check the facts. “We think it’s a good idea to ask for medical history. We also suggest moms to go and get pre-qualified at a breast milk bank, which means they make you jump through all these hoops and we suggest those are the best moms to buy milk from for their babies,” says Snow, who designed the website for his wife Chelly, a breast-feeding mom.”

Mom offers breast milk for sale

A Winnipeg mom was trying to sell her frozen breast milk online but was forced to remove the post.

Sara Wiens has three months’ worth of breast milk her four-month-old son can’t drink so rather than see it go to waste, she advertised it for sale on Kijiji.

But she didn’t get the response she expected.

“[There were] quite a lot of negative responses,” Wiens said, adding she was told to take the ad off the site because the sale of bodily fluids is not allowed.

There were about five people who expressed interest “but for various reasons they decided not to go that route,” she said.

Wiens had pumped the milk and stored it for her son before she learned he had an allergy to cow’s milk protein.

The milk was pumped while Wiens was consuming dairy products but she has since dropped that from her diet and her son is able to drink the milk she is now producing.

“When we found out my son had a cow’s milk protein allergy … I had decided that we should let someone else use the milk,” she said.

Wiens still wants to sell the milk but is lost about how to do it now.

There are breast milk banks in Canada but not in Winnipeg and it would cost too much to ship it to Vancouver, she said.

It’s unfortunate that so many moms are having their posts removed for listing their breast milk. Though I do understand from Kijiji point of view, they just don’t allow any bodily fluids, including breast milk. Despite many moms getting negative responses about buying breast milk and selling breast milk, there is still a growing demand. Wet nurses used to be very popular and are currently taboo in the mainstream, perhaps with the slow economy and ‘breast is best’ mentality, we may see wet nurses back in demand?
